The Sapulpa Chieftain wrestling team has fallen on hard times, and the Sand Springs Sandites easily won the Highway 97 Rivalry by 63 points.
The Class 6A No. 5 Sand Springs wrestling team beat unranked Sapulpa, 69-6, Tuesday, Jan. 8 at the Sapulpa High School gym, and the Sandites surrendered only one match at 138 pounds.
Sapulpa (0-5) had to forfeit six of the 14 matches at weights 106, 113, 126, 160, 195 and 285, and the Sandites recorded three pins and three major decisions.
“We wrestled pretty well throughout the lineup,” said head coach Jarrod Patterson. “The guys worked hard to pick up bonus points.”
Sapulpa 138-pounder Luke Young pinned Jared Jenkins at the 1:58 mark of the first period for the Chieftains’ only win of the dual.
Colton Luker (106) and Brendon Wiseley (113) won the first two matches by forfeit, giving the Sandites a 12-0 lead right out of the gate. Riley Weir (120) pinned Sapulpa’s Colton Parrish in 19 seconds, and Seth Jones picked up a forfeit at 126 for the 24-0 Sandite lead.
Joseph Mattison (132) got a major decision over Justin Campbell before Sapulpa could put any points on the board. With a 28-0 lead, Sand Springs gave up a pin at 138 pounds.
Sand Springs (4-0) then scored 41 more points to close out the dual. Braden Dahl (160), Thomas Naugle (195), and Blake Brooks (285) won by way of forfeit, and Santana Naugle (182) and Scott Patton (152) won by major decision. Chris Kirby (170) and Riley Magee (220) picked up pins and six points each.
