There were 14 matches in the Sand Springs-Stillwater dual, but one could have been billed as the “main event.”
Sand Springs state champion Riley Weir faced former Sand Springs state champion Carter Young at 132 pounds in the Class 6A No. 5 Sandites’ 40-17 win over the No. 10 Stillwater Pioneers Tuesday, Dec. 18 at Ed Dubie Field House.
Young, who moved to Stillwater after winning a state championship at Sand Springs as a freshman, beat Weir, 6-4, after scoring two points with only seconds left in the match. The match-up was a battle between two state champions and Young eked out a win.
The match was deadlocked at 4-4, but Young was able to score the final two points with less than five seconds left. It was Stillwater’s first win of the night after Sand Springs had jumped out to a 19-0 lead. Christian Forbes won at 106, Brendon Wisely got a pin at 113, Dylan Luker got a forfeit at 120, and Seth Jones won at 126, giving the Sandites a 19-0 lead after four matches.
Blake Jones (138), Scott Patton (152), and Chris Kirby (160) got wins, and Riley Magee got a technical fall at 3:53. Kaden Glass (195) pinned his man at the 1:09 mark for the last Sandite win of the dual.
The Pioneers then closed out the dual winning at 220 and 285 pounds.
Sand Springs is now undefeated at 3-0, and Stillwater is 2-3.
