SANDITES GIVE UP FIELD GOAL IN OT FOR 23-20 DISTRICT LOSS

Shawnee kicker Kossi Kodoe hit the bar on his first point after attempt, failing to give his team the lead early in the game, but he redeemed himself, hitting the game-winning field goal in overtime. The Sand Springs Sandites fell to the Shawnee Wolves, 23-20, in overtime Friday, Sept. 21 at Shawnee High School during a torrential rain storm. It was the first district game of the season. Things started as well as they could for Sand Springs. Running back Joel Mackey scored an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play of the game, giving the Sandites a 6-0 lead. Kicker Jaden Weiser’s extra point attempt failed. Shawnee (1-3, 1-0 Dist. 6AII-2) answered after a Trey Wilkerson fumble at the 7:32 mark of the first quarter. Shawnee’s Elijah Powis recovered the fumble and running back Trejuan Shaw scored from 20-yards out. Kodoe missed his extra point attempt when the ball hit the right upright and bounced out. In the second quarter, Hayden Glass recovered a lateral backwards pass from Wolves quarterback Heath Hunter, setting up a touchdown run from Sandite quarterback Caden Pennington from one-yard out. The Sandites had the lead again at 12-6. Trailing 12-6 in the third, Shaw scored again for the Wolves, this time from 27-yards out to tie the game, 12-12. Shaw then scored his second TD of the quarter and third of the game on a 20-yard run. He also added the two-point conversion for the 20-12 Shawnee lead, their first of the night. Not to be outdone, Pennington scored another rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter and added a two-point conversion to tie the game at 20-20. Late in the game, the Sandite offense had a chance to score, but Pennington threw his first interception of the season deep in Wolves territory. Shawnee’s Jaylon Orange stopped the Sandite drive on the 5-yard line with only 12 seconds left to play. After a 20-20 score at the end of regulation, the Sandites got the ball first at the 10-yard line but couldn’t put any points on the board. Kodoe then put the game away with a 27-yard game-winning field goal. The Sandite defense came up big in the overtime and pushed the Wolves offense backwards. Pennington scored two rushing TDs and has three on the season, and Mackey scored his fifth of the season. Sand Springs is now 1-3 and 0-1 in Dist. 6AII-2.
