NO. 5 SAND SPRINGS BEATS NO. 9 JENKS, 38-23

A string of pins in the lower weights gave Sand Springs a big lead and they never looked back in a Frontier Conference win on the road. Class 6A No. 5 Sand Springs beat No. 9 Jenks, 38-23, Thursday, Jan. 25 at Frank Herald Memorial Gym for their 13th dual win of the season. “We wrestled well and beat a good team. I’m proud of the effort,” said head coach Kelly Smith. Sand Springs (13-3) got pins from Carter Young (106), Riley Weir (113) and Seth Jones (120) after Jenks took an early 6-0 lead. The dual started at 170 pounds, and Dayvon Taylor (170) and Noah Almy (182) dropped their matches by three and four points, respectively. After a major decision by Josh Fincannon (195) and a pin from Gage Fain at 220, the Sandites took a 10-6 lead but a Robert Parrish loss at 285 pulled the Trojans within one point, 10-9. However, Sand Springs won six-straight matches, including three pins for the 38-9 Sandite lead. During that stretch, Blake Sargent (126) won a narrow, 4-3, decision against Elrod, and Irwin Portillo (132) recorded a major decision over Keeling, 12-4. “This team has had a great dual season with only one loss to No. 1 Broken Arrow, from Oklahoma with a different line up every week. Congratulations to a bunch of young wrestlers,” Smith said.
