TULSA – Gage Fain wrestled up and won the 285-pound match, and it only got worse from there for the Union Redskins.

The Class 6A No. 5 Sand Springs wrestling team beat Union, 48-15, Thursday, Jan. 11 on the road.

Sand Springs (5-0) jumped out to a 30-0 before the Redskins could put any points on the board, and the Sandite had a 48-3 lead with only three matches left.

“I’m really proud of these guys and how they wrestled tonight,” said head coach Kelly Smith. “That’s how you win duals. You’re really good guys get pins, and your younger guys don’t give up bonus points. That’s the difference.”

The Sandites got pins from Carter Young (106), Blake Sargent (126), Chris Kirby (145), Kaleb Tabor (152) and Fain (285), giving them bonus points.

The match started with Fain’s pin and Young, Brenden Wiseley, Seth Jones, Sargent and Irwin Portillo picked up wins for the 30-0 lead. Scotty Patton was the first Sandite to pick up a loss, losing to Jalen Hernandez, 9-3.

Kirby and Tabor pinned Blake Thomas and Avante Wilkins, respectively, and Jasanne Harjo (160) picked up a 10-5 win over Union’s Bryce Burdick for the 45-3 Sandite lead. Dayvonne Taylor (170) then beat Jake Rogers, 6-2, and Sand Springs took a commanding 48-3 advantage.

The Redskins then won three straight, including a forfeit at 220 pounds to end the dual.

Sand Springs has now won 25-straight duals dating back to last year. They will face Class 6A No. 1 Broken Arrow, Tuesday, Jan. 16 for their first true test of the season.
