The Highway 97 Rivalry didn’t go down to the wire or provide much excitement, but it resulted in another Sand Springs win.

The Class 6A No. 5 Sand Springs wrestling team beat the Sapulpa Chieftains, 45-24, Tuesday, Jan. 9 at Ed Dubie Field House.

Sand Springs (4-0) picked up 12 points with forfeits at 106 pounds (Carter Young) and 126 pounds (Blake Sargent), and the Sandite got pins from Riley Weir (120), Kaleb Tabor (152), Dayvonne Taylor (170), Riley Magee (182) and Gage Fain (220).

After Young picked up points at 106 with a forfeit, Sapulpa’s John Warford beat Jacob Rampy, 6-0, and the Chieftains cut the lead in half, 6-3. After that, Sand Springs went on a run, scoring 12-straight points. Weir pinned Justin Campbell, and Sargent picked up a forfeit for the 18-3 Sandite lead.

Sapulpa won their matches at 113, 132, 145, 160, 195 and 285, scoring 24 points and never really threatened. The Sandites had a 45-18 lead going into the final match, but Chieftain heavy weight Tyler Jay pinned James Anderson for the 45-24 final.

At 220, Fain pinned Sapulpa’s Braden Birdsong 43 seconds in his match for the fastest match of the night, and Weir, Tabor and Magee all recorded their pins in the first period, as well.

Sand Springs has now won 24-straight duals, dating back to 2016.
