HIGH SCHOOLS: SAND SPRINGS' PAYTON SCOTT BREAKS RECORD, BUT SANDITES FALL TO MIDWEST CITY 47-12

MIDWEST CITY – Sand Springs running back Payton Scott now holds the state’s single season rushing record in Class 6A after a 171-yard performance against Midwest City, but he won’t get a chance to add to his record. Class 6AII No. 2 Midwest City Bombers beat Sand Springs, 47-12, in the first round of the playoffs Friday at Jim Darnell Stadium, ending the Sandites’ season. After rushing for only 49 yards in the first half, Scott ended up with 171 and has 2,586 yards on the season, breaking the record of 2,515 that was set in 2013. “It’s amazing,” Scott said. “Those linemen, fullbacks, tight ends and wide outs deserve all the credit. They blocked their butts off all year.” The Bombers (10-1) scored 34 points in the first half, scoring on every possession except the last, when they took a knee to go into the locker room. Midwest City’s Preston Colbert ended with four passing touchdowns, including three to Juwan Walker in the second quarter. Colbert’s first score was a 14-yard pass to Dajon Sealey, and running back Omari John added a 41-yard TD run for a 13-0 lead in the first quarter. Colbert then threw scoring passes of 25, 44 and 12 yards to Walker. After an Astin Anderson touchdown to start the third quarter, Scott scored two straight for the Sandites, breaking the rushing record in the process. The Bombers ended the scoring in the fourth quarter on a 41-yard interception return from Tramon Jackson with 10:51 left. Sand Springs quarterback Caden Pennington had to run for his life nearly the entire game. He was sacked four times in the first half with two interceptions and a lost fumble. Sandite defensive lineman Kris Edwards recovered a fumble late in the third quarter, leading to a 26-yard touchdown from Scott, who carried half of the Bomber defense into the end zone. Scott’s first score was a 1-yard run. He ends the season with 33 touchdowns, a school record, and he also has school records for rushing yards in a game (506) and in a season (2,568), which is also a state record.
